A sanction is an opportunity to educate the resident on the effects of their behavior and to attempt to affect change in that resident's behavior in the future. Any student found responsible for violating any of the UCSB Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises regulations or policies may be subject to one or more of the following sanctions below. Failure to complete the conditions outlined in any sanction will result in a HOLD being placed on the student's records and registration. A hold on student records and registration will, for example, prevent the student from registering and from obtaining transcripts, verifications, or a diploma from the University until the student satisfies the conditions of the sanction.
Administrative Sanctions
This is the first step in the formal administrative process. A written notice states to the resident that the continued or repeated violations of University or Housing policies or procedures may result in further disciplinary action.
Informs the resident that any further violation of policy will result in a Conduct Board Hearing.
Cancellation of the Housing Contract and Meal Plan (if applicable). Failure to check out properly, vacate at the stated time, or continued, or repeated violations of University or Housing policies or campus regulations may result in further disciplinary action.
Exclusions from all University-owned housing as a tenant or guest is also included with this sanction. Depending on the nature of the incident, a student may also receive a university sanction such as Warning, Probation, Suspension, or Dismissal from the University.
The student is expected to follow all room change procedures. Failure to relocate properly, or within the specified time period, or continued or repeated violations of University or Housing policies may result in immediate eviction and further disciplinary action. Students who are relocated are generally excluded from being in or near the vicinity of the original location and are prohibited from participating in the original location's events and activities.
Monetary payment for damages to University property.
Educational Sanctions
Sanctions are designed to educate residents regarding campus community standards, the possible impact of their actions, and/or to have the resident think critically about their behavioral choices. Examples include, but are not limited to: community service, program implementation and/or attendance, or research/reaction papers.
The UCSB Alcohol & Drug Program strives to create a safe, healthy, and learning-conducive environment through the promotion of healthy choices concerning the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The program offers several courses designed to provide alcohol and drug information, risk reduction strategies, and a venue for students to speak freely and openly about their own experiences with alcohol, drugs, and partying. Courses meet weekly and are $60.
Written agreements are used for residents whose behavior is detrimental to their personal safety and/or their ability to live in a residential community. Administrative agreements will outline specific behaviors and/or conduct that is unacceptable.
The Fire Safety Seminar is offered through Residential & Community Living. The seminar addresses fire safety and the role that community members play to maintain a safe environment. While the focus is to clarify the expectation of community members, the seminar promotes open discussion on a wide variety of fire safety issues in and outside of the residential community setting.
Seminar Objectives:
- To understand the importance of fire safety.
- To understand your role and expectations as a member of the university and residential community.
- To successfully avoid future violations of housing policies pertaining to fire safety.
