Nutrition Week. Day 5. Healthy Beverages

Well today is the last day of Nutrition Week, and it feels like the week was a great success so far. A recap of some of the events that took place includes an exotic fruit tasting. On Monday students were able to sample exotic fruit like the Cape Gooseberry or Baby Kiwi.  On Tuesday students made their own trail mix. Trial mix items included dried cranberries and blueberries, almonds, walnuts and pepitas.  On Thursday students were able to create their own flavored yogurt. Students could mix nonfat Greek yogurt with blueberries, strawberries, and unsweetened cocoa powder.  We still have one day left of celebration and today we focus on healthy beverages.

In the dining commons today you will see a poster board called rethink your drink. The poster displays the amount of sugar in one can of soda. Soda options included on the poster include coca cola, cherry coke, fanta and A&W root beer to name a few. Be sure to check it out and find out how much sugar your favorite soda has.

I encourage you all to try to limit the amount of soda you consume. Instead of drinking soda try different options like infused water. A fun way to drink water is to infuse it. You can easily make your own infused water at home. Try adding any of the following to a cold glass or pitcher of water:

  •  Sliced citrus fruits or zest (lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit)
  • Crushed fresh mint
  • Peeled, sliced fresh ginger or sliced cucumber
  • Crushed berries

So what are your best beverage options?
Water comes in first place. Water is the best choice for quenching your thirst but also providing your body the needed fluid to restore loss through your metabolism, breathing, sweating and other activities. After water I recommend tea, coffee (without added sweeteners), low fat or skim milk and soy beverages. Both coffee and tea contain antioxidants, flavoniods and other substances that may be good for your health. Low fat and skim milk and soy beverages b both are good sources of protein and other essential micronutrients.
