UC Santa Barbara takes great pride in providing an enriching student housing experience for our students. Under normal circumstances, we offer housing guarantees to a large percentage of our student population. However, it is not possible for us to know whether the current public health crisis will allow us to maintain normal operations in undergraduate student housing when the fall quarter begins. Consequently, like many universities across the country, we cannot offer a housing guarantee at this time.

Planning efforts are underway to bring students, faculty, and staff back to campus this fall, but those decisions will be guided by public health guidelines as well as considerations for the health and well-being of our community. We are still awaiting guidance from campus and health authorities to determine how many spaces we can offer to student residents. We are committed to housing students on campus to the maximum extent possible, but it will be some time before we know more precisely how many students we can accommodate in our housing units.

After completing their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR), we are asking freshmen students to complete an application for 2021-22 housing. Once we receive guidance on how many students we can accommodate, we will send out contract offers using a weighted lottery for available spaces.  We hope to have this guidance and make contract offers by early summer.  Please check your university email accounts routinely throughout the summer to ensure you do not miss out on important housing messages.

Here are the deadlines for incoming freshman in 2021-22:

  • Submit UCSB Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) by the deadline to be eligible to complete a residence hall application (below).
    • Students should register for a UCSBNet ID, but while they are waiting for this to activate they can access the Freshmen Housing process using the Pre-UCSBNet ID link below the UCSBNet ID login on the login page for housing.  
  • Deadline to complete the residence hall application with priority consideration is May 10, 2021 at 4:00pm*.  
  • There is no application fee.
  • If you have applied to live in University Housing, you should receive an email at the conclusion of the process.
  • Please check your email account directly and frequently so that you don’t miss any important messages from UCSB. It may not be reliable to forward your U-Mail to an alternate e-mail (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.). If you don’t receive a confirmation email from us within a few minutes of submitting your application, check your spam and trash folders. 
  • If you're participating in the Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP), please visit the FSSP page for more information. 

*Freshmen who are admitted after May 10 are able to qualify for priority housing consideration within 5 days of their SIR date.

  • Freshmen that are offered housing will complete contracts and placement preferences, including optional roommate selection.
  • You must SIR before completing your housing application. 
  • Please set up your UCSBNet ID and password at the earliest opportunity as after this is set up that will become the default email address for communications from our office.  
Cancellation Policy
  •  There is a cancellation fee and a replacement is required if we no longer have an active waiting list. Cancellation fees are as follows:
    • There is a $100 cancellation fee from the time of signing the contract until July 15; 
    • After July 15 there is a $350 cancellation fee until September 1;
    • After September 1, contract holders are rent responsible until a replacement is found, or unless otherwise notified.

 2021-22 Housing Application

If you have signed a contract for the 2021-22 academic year you can use the link below to request to cancel your 2021-22 housing contract. 

 2021-22 Contract Cancellation

For those students who currently have a 2021-22 contract you can create a roommate group with other contract holders in the Residence Halls by using the optional roommate process below. The deadline to set up roommate groups is July 20th at 4pm. This is an optional process and those who do not complete it will be matched based upon the answers to their roommate preference questions.
