Congratulations to Julie Ballesteros for receiving the Al Day Service Award from the Residence Halls Association Coordinating Board. This award is presented annually to a staff member for providing service above and beyond the call of duty to our residence hall residents.

An innovative pilot project has come to fruition! A Personal Mobile Device Charging Station at Carrillo Dining Commons was recently installed. This was a Residence Hall Association project. Matilda, RHA President, and Will, Santa Catalina Resident Assistant and former Project CARE Director for RHA, worked with Jill Hurd, Jill Horst, Tom Beland, Ben Price and Ernesto Villegas to make it happen.

This past May we had our annual Service Award Ceremony. We celebrated 40 talented and caring staff members with a cumulative total of 685 years of service to the UC! Congratulations to the honored staff for reaching these extraordinary plateaus!

On June 9 a handful of H&RS staff had the honor of watching Ko Kashiwazaki graduate from the Law Enforcement Academy at Allan Hancock College. Seven months earlier, Ko was a Conduct Officer for Residential & Community Living, and as of July 3 he is patrolling UCSB as a Police Officer. Ko was a standout at the graduation. He was named class valedictorian, made an inspirational speech, and proceeded to win two more awards! Congratulations Ko!

Kudos to all university award recipients for being recognized for their excellence during their years at UCSB, and an extra special shout out to the amazing students who have been great role models and student leaders in our communities: former and current RAs... Ariana Rodriguez, Su Jin (Sally) Oh, Sara Maroofi, Gold Okafor, Brandon Rose, William Leu, and Cierra Russell; API Cultural Mentors... Alvin Basilio and Nicole Tran; former RHA/AS on-campus representative Kimia Hashemian; and Jamelia Harris, MultiCultural Awareness Chair.

The Juan Marquez Art Show, hosted by the 2015-16 Strategic Plan World Class Facilities Team on May 19 in the San Nicolas Main Lounge, was a great success! This was part of an initiative to bring more art to our communities, and based on the large student turnout and "oohs" and "aahs" overheard, they appreciated our efforts. You can read more about it in an in-depth article in the student newspaper, The Bottom Line. Enjoy!
