Showing Appreciation for a Job Well Done
UCSB's Staff Celebration Week 2019
Staff Celebration Week is an annual event celebrating the contributions of UCSB’s talented and dedicated staff. Taking place during May each year, the week provides opportunities for staff to enjoy all that campus offers with various tours, concerts, social events, and more. Departments across campus volunteer their time and resources to put on these events, and allow staff the chance to explore a part of campus that perhaps they’d never heard of or visited before. It’s truly amazing what UCSB offers to our community! Here are a few highlights from Staff Celebration Week 2019:
Chancellor’s Staff Luncheon
The luncheon is the most popular event of the week, bringing over 2,000 staff to Commencement Lawn for a delicious taco bar lunch provided by UCen Catering. During the lunch, awards were presented by Chancellor Yang, Cynthia Seneriz, the Director of Human Resources, and Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services, Garry MacPherson. The awards ceremony included the Staff Citation of Excellence awards, Supervisory Certificate Program certificates, and more! Staff enjoyed music provided by KCSB and browsed the popular plant and pottery sale.
For the first time ever in the history of Staff Celebration Week, the AlloSphere offered tours. The AlloSphere is a one-of-a-kind immersive instrument with twenty-six projectors that light up a three-story sphere, and fifty-five speakers that provide surround sound. The AlloSphere immerses visitors with simulations, data visualizations, and artistic content. Fun fact: both tours filled up within TWO minutes of registration opening!
Theater/Dance Behind-the-Scenes Tour
Also new in 2019, this tour allowed staff a behind-the-scenes glimpse of multiple theaters. Participants got to stand on stage and see the audience exactly how performers would with full lights, see the workings of a scene shop, look at past and current costumes in the costume shop, and watch a short 5-minute performance from theater and dance students.
Staff Social & Crafts Bazaar
On Thursday of Staff Celebration Week, staff enjoyed an afternoon of delightful socializing. A BBQ lunch was provided and employees mingled on the Commencement Lawn and browsed the crafts bazaar. Vendors consisted of fellow staff members selling their own arts and crafts, and included items such as hand-drawn greeting cards, jewelry, tote bags, candles, and more!
Tour of Specimen Plants
Professor Bruce Tiffney, from the College of Creative Studies, led this ever-popular tour across campus. Staff got to experience a brief sample of the diversity of plants on campus and learn about our “living museum” that serves as a testament to the interests of the generations of botanists who taught here over the years. Plants on our campus originated from as far away as Australia, the Canary Islands, and India!
HDAE employees were recognized during Staff Celebration Week: Becky Hoffman of Residential Dining and Lori Nicolaides of Transportation & Parking Services were recognized for completing the Supervisory Certificate Program, and Pam Scott of Residential & Community Living received a Staff Citation of Excellence award. Congratulations!

Residential Operations Appreciates Staff
From cleaning rooms and offices, to maintaining and fixing equipment and making our landscape beautiful, Residential Operations teams help provide a safe and clean learning and living environment for our ten thousand plus residents. They deserve a tremendous thank you, and this year we had a Residential Operations staff appreciation lunch at Goleta Beach, which included our first annual Bean Bag Toss tournament. Congratulations to Francisco and Juan for winning the tourney (left photo below is of Bean Bag Toss Finalists: Paul Kouns, Francisco Higuera Aguirre, Juan Flores, Ulysses McKeown.)
All of Operations was able to appreciate one of our longest serving employees before his retirement, Raul Marquez, who has worked at UCSB for more than 40 years. He has worked in most of the halls and apartments during his time here. When UCSB purchased Santa Catalina (formerly Francisco Torres) in 2003, Raul helped successfully transition the building over to UCSB Housing. The photo he’s holding (below right) shows the old complex that he managed through many changes. Thanks to all Residential Operations employees for your hard work, and especially to Raul for 40 great years. We’ll miss you.
