Planning Great Digital Experiences for Students
My name is Jill Singletary and I have the best job on campus! I manage the programming in The Hub in the University Center. My job pays me to keep up on pop culture, meet cool and interesting people, and program and attend all sorts of fun events in the Hub and now virtually. What could be better!?
When the pandemic began I switched gears and began brainstorming ideas for virtual events. Zoom has transformed everything! Here is what The HUB has been up to:
Queen for a Day: Makeup lessons with the fabulous Roxy Wood! Students learned how to paint their faces with glitter and glam like a queen.
Mat Pilates with Sara: A two-part exercise class concentrating on strengthening abs, triceps, legs and back while improving posture and flexibility.
Hair Emergency! Salons play a major part in many people's routines, but because COVID forced all non-essential businesses to close, students needed some help in this area. Class 1 focused on: Step away from the shears! Are you thinking about cutting your own bangs? Are your bangs grown out? Learn how to trim your own bangs; Class 2 focused on: how to create something fabulous when in need of a haircut! Do you need help styling your hair? Learn how to style your locks; and finally, Class 3 focused on: WHAT did I do?! How to get a temporary fix if you have made a mess of your hair! Did you take matters into your own hands? Get rapid fire tips to make your hair look better.
Comedian and UCSB Alum Chinedu Unaka came to campus via ZOOM! Chinedu is a comedian, actor and a writer known for his stand up appearances on television, around the United States and internationally.
Alaska Yokota aka DJ ALASKAFORNIA is an up and coming DJ known for her fun, energizing mix of house and techno. Alaska is in her 4th year at UCSB living in Isla Vista where she mixes at local house parties and venues in Santa Barbara.
How to Paint Happy Trees: Students joined Michelle and learned painting techniques. Students focused on relaxing, painting and enjoying some downtime with friends all while creating something to brighten up their spaces.
My focus was to create fun and community for our students during this difficult time. Keep your eyes open for more events coming up during Fall quarter. There just might be a Staff Open Mic Night, and I am always open for ideas and collaboration so let’s chat at jsingletary@ucsb.eduYou can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Stay well!
