If you're visiting this page that most likely means you've been given editing rights to an HDAE web page. Congratulations on becoming a content manager! Below are some tips that will help you navigate adding, editing and formatting text or a button. If you have needs beyond that (such as adding images), please contact our webmaster, Eric Zobel at ezobel@housing.ucsb.edu. Thank you!
- Browsers
- It is recommended to use the latest version of your preferred browser. Firefox and Chrome may provide the best editing experience, however.
- Copying & Pasting
- copy and paste content/text through a text editor (notepad, textedit) rather than copying straight from Microsoft Word or email on to a web page.
- An editor strips out hidden characters and formatting that may not be apparent in the copying.
- if you are having odd formatting errors on a web page sometimes it is best to cut out all the text, paste it into notepad, and then copy it back again.
- Be patient. The online web editor seems like it should work like Microsoft Word but it is based on code (HTML) and has its own rules of navigation.
- copy and paste content/text through a text editor (notepad, textedit) rather than copying straight from Microsoft Word or email on to a web page.
- Working with 'Styles'
- sometimes styles apply to more sections than you highlight
- try adding a carriage return (break or enter) to separate sections, apply the style, then go back and delete the carriage return.
- Soft Carriage Return: sometimes hitting 'enter' causes a double space. Try holding down shift-enter to single space.
- Phone Numbers: please use this format ###-###-####

- Page Titles: Please check with the webmaster or MarCom group before changing page titles. Page titles are linked to the page URL and can affect navigation and web links throughout the site (including other sites that may be cross-linked).
- Hyperlinks
- select the word or words needing to be linked to another website (URL)
- click the 'chain with the plus sign' icon in the editing bar above (or alternatively, right click and choose 'Link to Content')
- For pages within the website...
- first try typing the page title in the search box
- if your page does not appear you will have to navigate to the actual page via another tab, put your cursor on the 'Edit' tab, then look to the lower left of the browser screen to get the Node number.
- it is preferable to use the page that appears in the dropdown after entering the page title OR the node rather than inputting the URL. If you select the page from the dropdown or use the node and the URL changes, the link will not be broken.
- Enter the Node in the 'Link URL' box as follows...e.g. Node/450
- first try typing the page title in the search box
- For pages outside the site...
- enter the URL for the desired page in the 'Link URL' box.
- you will need the entire link beginning with http://.
- For pages within the website...
- Always double check links when you are finished editing and saved changes.
- Buttons
- add text for button first
- select text and link a URL to it
- click the 'style' drop down box and choose 'Button' (this selection will not appear unless you have already hyperlinked the text)
