virus & spyware information

As a higher-education institution, UCSB is a constant target for hackers, spammers, virus writers, and script kiddies. In the Spring of 2004, over 700 ResNet users became infected in one evening. Due to the destructive nature of viral infections, ResNet requires the use of a network admissions system to protect the network from exposure to attacks. This system will require ALL users of Microsoft Windows to be certain that their computer is checked regularly for patches and security updates.

Keep Your Virus Definitions Up to Date

Anti-virus software protects your computer from viruses and worms but it is useless without the latest virus definition. Virus definition files help anti-virus software detects new viruses and instruct the software on how to remove the virus.

We recommend that you turn on automatic updates for your anti-virus software and check for new updates at least daily.

What is Spyware?
Many new freeware and even some commercial programs come with an abundance of hidden programs called SPYWARE. With these programs, the developers collect personal information from you and your computer including websites you commonly go to, and items you commonly buy. They then use that information to send back pop-up ads to your desktop.
In addition to invading your privacy, these programs also are a security risk to your computer. They access the internet to send your data, but hackers can utilize their connections to hack into your computer. Also, these programs are not written with any regard for speed and efficiency; they slow your computer down.
ResNet recommends that all residents use the following utilities on a regular basis to protect from Spyware and Adware vulnerabilities:
