The information contained on this site is designed to acquaint you with the opportunities, benefits and process for living in one of the residential communities at UCSB. The site also offers insight into the extensive set of services offered by Housing & Residential Services in its support of the academic mission of UCSB. We hope that it will serve as a valuable guide to gaining a better understanding of the residential community experience at UCSB.

A unique educational opportunity exists within the residential communities of UCSB. One of the discoveries that students quickly make is that their residence is more than just a place to eat and sleep. There are opportunities to expand personal horizons through involvement in numerous academic, social, cultural and recreational activities.

Our communities are composed of people from a variety of backgrounds. Students meet a lot of new people and form new friendships within a diverse social environment. This is important because it challenges each person to figure out ways to help us all thrive by living together productively, stressing our common life experiences rather than our differences.

Students learn to understand that it is their community, which is greatly enhanced by their energy, enthusiasm and leadership. Living together is not an easy task. It takes a lot of courage, consideration, and responsibility to keep a residential community functioning at its optimum level. Our goal is to minimize the rules and maximize the learning that occurs. Fostering an understanding of and respect for the rights and interests of others helps to achieve this.
