  • Opened the much-anticipated Manzanita Village, with 800 new spaces for residents. In response to the increased number of freshmen residents, a new Assistant Director, Assistant Student Leadership Coordinator, Resident Director (RD), Assistant Resident Director (ARD) and Resident Assistants (RA’s) were added.

  • Drew upon the expertise of Residential Life staff, Residence Halls Association (RHA) staff, and support staff to get Manzanita Village off to a great start. The new team handled many challenges, nurtured RHA’s growth, and hosted the first “Far Side Festival” to build community.

  • Hired recent University of California, Santa Barbara graduates with a strong history within Residential Life to serve in Resident Director roles when immigration laws delayed entrance to the U.S. for one of our new RD’s from Canada.

  • Cooperated to handle an emergency when the campus generator went out and all the halls spent many hours in the dark. The RAs, ARDs and RDs did a great job in helping residents stay calm through the dark night.

  • Managed an increased number of medical transports and crises, due to the larger number of freshmen. Counseling cases were handled well, and cases lessened as the year progressed.

  • Administered the housing application process flawlessly, with IS support. Assignment Services gave Continuing and New students the information that they needed in a timely way, using RMS to its full potential.

  • Negotiated changes in our growing department with the comprehensive assistance of the support staff.

  • Rotated “meetings-by-area” with our traditional all-staff meetings to increase discussion at the area level.

  • Began preparation and hiring for newly purchased Francisco Torres, adding a new Assistant Director, RD, ARD and new RA’s for next academic year.

  • Supported and challenged RHA, as it expanded in scope and number of student representatives. RHA Executives were successful in their bid for the PACURH Annual conference, which will be held at UCSB in the Fall of 2003.

  • Supported and organized Hall Staff Retreats, Staff Cultural Retreats, an RHA Retreat and a Muticultural Awareness Chairs (MAC) Retreat.
