This has been a remarkable year of growth for Housing & Residential Services (H&RS), as we merged Francisco Torres into our expanding housing and dining program. The achievements and contributions that occurred in the last academic year are recorded here in the Annual Report. In its first year on-line, the 2002-03 Annual Report chronicles major accomplishments by individual members and by the program units that make up H&RS.

H&RS provides housing and associated residential life services for UCSB’s undergraduate student, graduate student and faculty population. We employ a staff of 595 FTE in the department which equates to 351 regular employees and more than 700 student employees. H&RS is a campus auxiliary department within the division of Administrative Services reporting through the Associate Vice Chancellor, Administrative and Auxiliary Services. As Executive Director of Housing & Residential Services, I serve as University of California, Santa Barbara’s chief housing officer.

Our organizational structure is designed to permit cooperation in managing the service programs within the organization. The programs include Apartment & Community Living (Family Student Housing, Single Student Apartments, Community Housing Office), Business & Financial Services (Budget & Finance, Faculty Housing Services, Information Systems & Technology, Human Resource Development), Residential Dining Services, Residential Life, and Residential Operations (Maintenance & Energy Programs, Custodial & Landscaping Services, Campus Conference Services, Project Management). This organizational structure works to provide specific focus to the primary services of the housing program.

During 2002-03, H&RS expanded our housing base with the purchase of Francisco Torres, and gained experience with our newly built and renovated facilities (Manzanita Village and Carrillo Dining Commons), while maintaining focus on our core values and our vision for the future. In January 2003, a group of housing staff members from all levels of the organization spent two days reviewing progress on our Strategic Plan vision, which was first written in 1998.

As this report demonstrates, each program unit within H&RS maintained a commitment to student residents and to staff members. Throughout the Annual Report, there are also quotes from staff members in H&RS who best tell the story of what We Are About…!
