At the 1998 Strategic Planning Conference
70 H&RS staff, students and campus administrators developed eight
vision statements designed to help us transition smoothly into the
21st century. One of our visions was to have “world class facilities”
by achieving excellence in all of our housing venues. We are currently
involved in a facility investment strategy that will renew our existing
housing stock and increase the housing available to the UCSB student
community. We expect new and upgraded facilities that will set a 21st
century standard for residential living and learning. Our investment
strategy has allowed us to respond effectively to the needs of the
student housing community, while maintaining rates at below market
levels. The magnitude of our capital program will create a larger
organization and physical plant over a very short span of time. Our
goal will be to maintain our health and vitality as an organization
as we continue to provide resources that fulfill our value of quality
service.
- In December 2002, UCSB had the unique opportunity to acquire
a major piece of real estate. The Francisco Torres Residence
Hall was purchased adding its 1325-beds to the already
existing complement of housing stock. This acquisition provided
H&RS with the ability to extend our quality programs in residential
life, dining services and operations to the large number of UCSB
students who have historically populated Francisco Torres.
- The Sierra Madre Apartments will add to our
complement of family student residences. Sierra Madre is located
on UCSB’s North Campus, and will consist of 151 three-bedroom
units, a housing type that is not currently in the mix of family
student housing offerings. We expect to occupy Sierra Madre by
the fall of 2006.
- Targeted at our graduate student community, the San
Clemente Apartments is a 972-bed complex slated for a
fall 2007 opening. After extensive campus consultation, San Clemente
was sited at the El Colegio border of the Storke fields. A combination
of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and four-bedroom units, San Clemente
will be the campus’ first housing facility dedicated to
single graduate students.
- A series of seismic correction and renovation projects will
address compliance with UC guidelines for seismic integrity. The
goal is to upgrade all of our facilities seismic rating to “good”
as a result of these capital initiatives. In addition, each facility’s
physical plant will be modernized to current standards as benchmarked
to the best practices of our field. Included in the seismic renovations
are San Rafael Hall, Francisco Torres
Hall and the dining commons (De La Guerra and
Ortega). The San Rafael renovation was completed
in 2003 The Francisco Torres and De La Guerra renovations will
be completed in fall 2004, and Ortega in summer 2006.
- The construction of the Life Sciences academic building required
the residential life program to vacate its historical trailer
site. The Office of Residential Life has temporarily been relocated
while we design and construct the Residential Life Resource
Center adjacent to the central administrative hub in
Building 1501. The Center will be completed in 2005, giving residential
life and other student housing services a permanent home.
H&RS continues to explore available options that provide quality
living environments for UCSB students. The Housing Capital Plan
will evolve into the Master Plan for Housing in 2003-04.
