Is it just me or does it feel like people keep getting sick? The flu and some other nasty colds seem to be circulating around town. Let me tell you, good nutrition is essential for a strong immune system. Your immune system can help to protect you from seasonal illness, like the flu, and also other health problems including allergies.

Here is how you can help protect yourself against infection and boost your immunity during the winter months. Include these nutrients as part of your daily diet.

Protein is part of the body’s defense mechanism. Eat a variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meat, poultry, eggs, beans and peas, soy products and unsalted nuts and seeds.

Vitamin A helps regulate the immune system and protects you from infections by keeping skin and tissues healthy. You can find vitamin A from foods that are green, orange, and yellow vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, red bell peppers, and apricots. Vitamin A is also found in eggs or foods labeled vitamin-A fortified, such as milk or cereal.

Vitamin C helps the immune system work properly to protect the body from disease. Include this vitamin in your diet with citrus fruits such as oranges and tangerines, or red bell pepper, papaya, strawberries, tomato juice or foods fortified with vitamin C, like some cereals.

Vitamin E. Our bodies need vitamin E to boost its immune system. It can help fight off invading bacteria and viruses. Include vitamin E in your diet with fortified cereals, sunflower seeds, almonds, vegetable oils (such as sunflower or safflower oil), hazelnuts, peanut butter or spinach.

Zinc helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses.  Zinc can be found in lean meat, poultry, seafood, milk, whole grain products, beans and nuts.
