It seems like recipes from popcorn to smoothies are calling for turmeric these days. Turmeric has a warm, bitter taste and is frequently used to flavor or color curry powders, mustards, butters, and cheeses. This spice also pairs well with potatoes, lentils, cauliflower and rice. Turmeric is touted as a treatment for inflammation and potentially benefiting people with gastrointestinal disorders. It contains a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin. And curcumin is the chemical that may provide some of the benefits listed above.
Are the health claims true and should you incorporate turmeric into your diet?
Turmeric is an antioxidant and can help prevent, delay or repair some types of cell and tissue damage. Turmeric has also been used by many people with digestive disorders as a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). But the main problem with curcumin is that what little we absorb is rapidly cleared, so very little actually reaches our tissues. It is still too early to determine what some of the major benefits of the spice. Nonetheless the color is amazing and if you enjoy the flavor you can easily incorporate turmeric by adding to roasted vegetables, salad dressings, or popcorn.
