Sometimes in your work or school day do you find that you need a pick me up? I know when 3:00 pm hits I want something to munch on or drink. Because I don’t drink soda or other sugary beverages, I usually just drink plain water. But that can get pretty boring and fast. So I decided to do some research and see if there is something I can enhance my water with. Of course I have always heard about adding sliced fruit or herbs to water but what about those squeezable flavor enhancers you can add to your water. I wonder if they good for you?
The flavored water enhancers are usually calorie free so they are sugar free. To provide the sweet taste they can be sweetened using an artificial sweetener like sucralose and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K). What is sucralose and ace-k? They are synthetic sugar substitutes that may be derived from naturally occurring substances. For example sucralose comes from sugar. They are intense sweeteners because they are many times sweeter than regular sugar.
For many decades artificial sweeteners have been questioned. Are they safe or not? Some are concerned with risk of cancer and other health problems. The National Cancer Institute goes as far to say that there is no sound scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners approved in the U.S cause cancer or other serious healthy issues. So right now artificial sweeteners are considered generally safe in limited amounts.
I guess for me I still rather flavor my water using real fruits and herbs. So I went online and found some recipes to try. Over the weekend after I go to the store I am going to try a Blackberry Sage Flavored Water. The recipe is so easy, just add sage leaves to a jar and bruise with a muddler. Add blackberries; press and twist with muddler to release their juices. Fill jar with ice cubes, add water to the top, stir, cover and refrigerate.
I will try this over the weekend and report back. If you have a favorite flavored water recipe please share. I would love to try it.
