San Joaquin Apartments

We are very excited to announce that the San Joaquin Apartments & Portola Dining Commons project is scheduled to break ground in early 2015! For those of you who have yet to hear about the project, there are 3-main areas of development around Santa Catalina:

1. Four Villages of 3-story apartments and community buildings that will be built on the empty parking lot to the north of Santa Catalina.

2. Two 6-story Towers along Storke Road with top-floor terraces that overlook a central plaza of courtyards, open space, and a Market with local and sustainable food options.

3. A new Portola Dining Commons built along El Colegio Road at the east end of the project site, which will include a large outdoor patio that has mountain views overlooking the pool area.

Overall, the project will build 178 apartments that provide housing for 1,003 students, as well as 4 live-in staff apartments and 4 faculty-in-residence apartments. The project is designed to achieve LEED-Gold certification and has employed several sustainable design measures including stormwater retention basin, energy efficient windows, and energy-star appliances for all kitchens.

San Joaquin is part of UCSB’s Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) that was approved yesterday by the California Coastal Commission. You can learn more about the LRDP here and here

We will regularly update our Project Blog as well as two bulletin boards at Santa Catalina with any impacts that may affect our residents and the surrounding community. The typical work hours for the contractors will be 8am-5pm. Every step possible will be taken to minimize any distractions and to maximize the great learning experience that occurs in Santa Catalina!

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns at projects@housing.ucsb.edu, and stay tuned for tabling events in Portola Dining Commons. Our Project Managers will join residents for lunch to answer any questions you may have about the project. San Joaquin is slated for completion by Fall 2017, so current 1st year Gauchos… you could be the first residents!
